An MQ-9 infrared view appeared to show an object dragging a strange atmospheric wake—an effect that could imply enormous energy. Two sensor views made the event look even more convincing. AARO’s partners found that the “wake” was generated by frame-over-frame video compression. The better-angle imagery and flight data pointed to ordinary aircraft; one case remained unidentified by type, but none displayed anomalous propulsion.

The compression algorithm overlays changing infrared frames and leaves a trail-like gradient behind the moving target.
Flight corridors and longer focal-length imagery align the dramatic target with prosaic aircraft, including a commercial airliner.
AARO did not identify every aircraft precisely, but it could still determine that the wake was artificial and the motion unremarkable.

The notes below are Vastward’s interpretation. They are not statements written by the source agency or witnesses.
The “wake” is exciting because it looks like physics, not just a blurry object. That makes tracing it into the software pipeline an especially satisfying reversal.
Multiple sensors are powerful only after we ask whether they share processing assumptions or independently measure the alleged effect.
“Unidentified aircraft type” and “anomalous propulsion” are different questions. Solving the second does not require pretending the first was solved.
